The meteorological summer ends quietly today and the first half of September is expected to bring a lot of fine weather. Temperatures will be rising in the south and at times the warmth spreads northwards....READ IN FULL

Friday starts dry and locally in the north there has been a ground frost overnight. The rest of the day brings sunny spells to much of the country with just a chance of the odd shower in southern England. In Northern Ireland and south western England cloud builds and by the evening patchy outbreaks of rain develop.

Maximum temperatures range from 15C (59F) in the north to 21C (70F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight wet weather spreads across the north and west of the UK. In the south and east it remains dry with clear periods.

Tomorrow outbreaks of rain continue in the north and west but they become increasingly patchy and fragmented. Elsewhere it stays dry with sunny spells and it will be warm in the afternoon. Temperatures in the south push towards 25C (77F).

It's a similar picture on Sunday. If anything temperatures will be a little higher in the south and the warmth filters northwards. In eastern Scotland a very warm 23C (73F) is possible. The west has more cloud and through the afternoon heavy outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland and possibly western Britain.

Mostly fine next week

On Monday a ban of cloud and rain in the north pushes down into central regions but it gradually fades away. Areas to the north and south of it have sunny spells.

During the rest of the week high pressure stays close to the UK and that leads to predominantly dry and fine conditions. In the south it could become very warm at times and with low pressure centred over Spain and France there is a possibility of thundery showers developing.
