Disappointing Bank Holiday

[Updated 07:40 27/08/2018]

Overcast weather

Summer 2018 will be remembered for being dry and very warm, but unfortunately it has fallen at the final hurdle. Although Bank Holiday Monday will be an improvement on yesterday, the weather won't be great. In the coming days more settled conditions return and the meteorological autumn could get off to fine and warm start....READ IN FULL

Bank Holiday Monday starts mostly overcast and there are showers in the north and west. Through the rest of the day showers continue but they become increasingly scattered. Quite a lot of cloud is likely to remain, but sunny spells will develop with the best of them probably in southern and central counties.

Maximum temperatures will be disappointing for late August, ranging from 14C (57F) in the north to 20C (68F) in the south. In the north a keen westerly wind adds to the cool feel. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight it stays mostly dry. Clear spells allow temperatures to drop into single figures but by the end of the night cloud begins to build in the north west.

Tomorrow will be sunnier and warmer in much of the country. Central and eastern England could see temperatures as high as 24C (75F). In the north west thicker cloud slowly extends southeastwards and outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland and western Scotland in the afternoon.

A mixed outlook for next week

During Wednesday outbreaks of rain in the north slowly spread southeastwards but they become fragmented and light. There is also a possibility of heavy and thundery rain affecting the south east and East Anglia but the extent of the risk is somewhat uncertain. That is because the wet weather is associated with a low pressure system moving northeastwards from the Bay of Biscay into the near continent, and computer models have been struggling to predict its precise path.

Through the rest of the week high pressure builds back. That should lead to a lot of dry weather and by the weekend temperatures could be climbing as very warm air from southern Europe filters northwards. In the north west it remains more changeable.
