[Updated 09:20 20/08/2018]

The weather stays changeable in much of the north during the next few days but southern and central areas become dry and increasingly warm. Cooler and showery conditions are expected to return southeastwards through mid-week to raise a question mark over the Bank Holiday weekend prospects....READ IN FULL

Sunday is off to a wet start in much of Scotland and further south it is windy and overcast with some showery rain. This morning the rain in the north clears eastwards and some sunny intervals develop, but there is likely to be a lot cloud around. It remains windy in the south but it will feel warm where the cloud breaks.

Maximum temperatures range from 16C (61F) in the north west to 25C (77F) in brighter parts of south and east England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight scattered showers push eastwards across Wales and western England, possibly reaching central areas  by the morning. Elsewhere it stays dry and in the south it will be very muggy.

Tomorrow showers become more widespread but many places have a dry and bright day. In the sunshine temperatures climb into the mid 20Cs. Winds will be a lot lighter than today.

Very warm for a time

Tuesday and Wednesday bring more fine weather to southern and central regions. In the north it will be more changeable and a band of rain slowly pushes southeastwards with cooler conditions following on behind. Temperatures in the south could climb into the upper 20Cs and there is a chance of 30C (86F) being reached in East Anglia and the south east on Wednesday.

During Thursday the cooler and showery conditions push southeastwards across all regions. That sets the theme for Friday and the Bank Holiday weekend. High pressure is expected to be centred to the southwest of the UK so the best weather may be in Wales and south western England, but in general showers are most likely in the northern half of the country.
