Northwest to southeast split

[Updated 07:10 17/08/2018]

Butterfly tree

The changeable theme continues during the coming days with pressure remaining high to the south of the UK and low to the northwest. That suggests the driest and warmest conditions will generally be in the south with a greater risk of rain in the north as disturbances move in from the Atlantic....READ IN FULL

Friday is off to windy start in northern areas and there are heavy outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland. Through the morning the wet weather spreads into western Britain and this afternoon it continues to push eastwards across northern areas. Northern Ireland turns drier and any rain to the east of high ground in northern Britain will be patchy. Southern and central counties have a dry day with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud.

It will be quite cool with maximum temperatures ranging from 14C (57F) in the north west to 22C (72F) in the south east and East Anglia. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

Forecast short cuts

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight the rain fades away in the north but it remains windy. Southern and central regions have a dry night with clear spells.

Tomorrow a weak weather front will be straddled across northern England. That produces light spells of rain but areas to the north and south of it have a dry day. The air mass over the southern half of the country will be a very warm one so in any sunny spells that develop temperatures climb rapidly towards the mid 20Cs.

During Sunday heavy spells of rain push eastwards across the north. There is uncertainty about their exact track, so keep up to date with the latest forecasts if you are planning a barbecue or outdoor event. Southern and central areas should have another dry and quite warm day.

Mostly dry in the south next week

Next week begins with warm and dry conditions in the south but the north remains more changeable. During the middle part of the week cooler air is expected to slowly push southeastwards. The second half of the week could be quite mixed but the south should often be dry.
