Sunday is off to a wet start in much of the country. Through the day outbreaks of heavy rain push eastwards, but there could be some drier and brighter spells too. This afternoon clearer skies return to Wales, south western England and Northern Ireland, although further showers bubble up. The northern half of Scotland probably misses the rain and stays dry.

Maximum temperatures range from 14C (57F) in the far north to 21C (70F) in England. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight bands of rain affect northern and eastern Britain. In other areas showers continue but there should be an increasing amount of dry periods by the morning.

Tomorrow morning showery rain pushes southwards in northern and eastern areas. Elsewhere there should be a good deal of dry weather, and brighter skies in the south west extend to much of southern and central England as well as Wales in the afternoon. In sunny spells temperatures could reach 23C (73F).

Becoming warmer and drier

By Tuesday the Azores high pressure builds northeastwards towards the UK. That gives the southern half of the UK a fine day and temperatures possibly reach 27C (81F). The north remains more mixed with a risk of showers at times.

The fine weather continues in southern and central regions on Wednesday. In the north a slow moving band of rain pushes southwards and is followed by cool and showery conditions in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Thursday and Friday look mixed. Outbreaks of rain spread southeastwards and are followed in all regions by cooler and showery conditions. By the weekend there are signs of it becoming more settled in the southern half of the UK as high pressure builds again from the southwest. In the north disturbances moving in from the Atlantic bring the risk of showers or longer spells of rain.
