Cool and showery in all areas

[Updated 08:20 10/08/2018]

Friday starts with showery rain in the north and west but central and eastern England are mostly dry. Through the course of the day heavy showers push eastwards across all regions, and some of them bring hail and thunder. There will be sunny spells too with the best of them in the south east.

It will be cool in all areas. Maximum temperatures range from 13C (55F) in the north west to 20C (68F) near the south coast. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight the showers fade away to leave a fresh night with clear spells. Late in the night cloud builds in the south west.

Tomorrow outbreaks of heavy rain steadily push across Northern Ireland and into western Britain. Central and eastern regions are expected to have a mostly dry but increasingly cloudy day. In sunny spells temperatures reach a pleasantly warm 22C (72F).

Overnight and through Sunday the wet weather slowly moves eastwards. The south east and East Anglia may stay dry until late in the day, and in sunny spells it will be warm and humid. Showery conditions follow the rain into Northern Ireland and western Britain.

Changeable next week

Next week begins changeable. Showers or longer spells of rain are possible at times, particularly in the north and west. There should also be drier and warmer periods with the best of them in the south and east. During the middle of the week high pressure probably begins to have more influence in the southern half of the UK so the chance of fine and warm spells increases, but the north remains more mixed.
