Mostly dry and very warm in the south

[Updated 07:00 04/08/2018]

Late summer view

Much of the UK has a fine weekend and in the south it will be very warm or hot. The south remains hot early next week but cooler and more changeable conditions in the north spread southwards to all regions by Wednesday....READ IN FULL

Saturday starts dry across most areas but thicker cloud is bringing patchy rain to the far north west. Through the rest of the day little changes. In western Scotland the risk of light rain continues but elsewhere it will be dry with variable amounts of cloud. The best of the sunshine is expected to be in the south, although cloud amounts could increase in the south east this afternoon.

Temperatures range from 15C (59F) in western Scotland to 30C (86F) in the south. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight outbreaks of rain spread eastwards across central and northern Scotland. Elsewhere it remains dry with clear periods and in the south it stays very muggy.

Tomorrow wet weather continues to affect Scotland. During the afternoon the rain becomes heavier and it possibly spreads into northern parts of Northern Ireland. Other regions stay dry with sunny periods and in the south temperatures could reach a hot and humid 31C (88F).

Hot start but more changeable next week

The early part of next week brings more hot weather to the south with temperatures on Monday and Tuesday perhaps reaching 33C (91F). The north and west will be more changeable and cooler. By Wednesday the cooler air should have pushed southeastwards across all of the country but in the south it may become mostly dry after early thunderstorms clear away.

Forecast details are uncertain for the second half of the week. A more typical west or southwesterly flow probably returns but high pressure could build over the southern half of the UK. That means southern counties could continue to have quite a lot of dry and warm weather.
