Heavy rain in the south clearing

[Updated 07:10 31/07/2018]

Fair weather

The south and east have a lot of fine weather in the next few days. The north and west remain more changeable in the short term but by the weekend it should become more settled. In southern Europe record breaking temperatures are possible and a Spanish plume could bring some of that heat northwards towards the UK early next week....READ IN FULL

Tuesday starts with very heavy and thundery rain in parts of central and eastern England. This morning the rain clears eastwards and sunny spells develop. Northern Ireland has a cloudy morning with outbreaks of rain and this afternoon they extend northwestwards into western Scotland. In other areas it remains bright.

The month ahead - August

Winter 2018/19 weather

Tonight it turns drier in Northern Ireland but wet weather continues in western Scotland. Elsewhere it will be mainly dry but there could be an odd shower in western England and Wales.

Tomorrow wet and windy weather spreads across much of the north and west, and at times the rain becomes heavy. Southern and eastern regions have a fine day with variable amounts of cloud and sunny periods. In the north it stays cool but temperatures continue to rise in the south.

Hot weather set to return

Through Thursday and Friday high pressure steadily builds from the south. That brings fine and very warm periods to southern and eastern areas. In the north and west it stays more changeable as weather fronts from the Atlantic continue to push in. By Thursday maximum temperatures in south eastern England approach 30C (86F) and Friday is looking even hotter.

The weekend is set to be fine and hot in the southern half of the UK. High pressure is expected to strengthen so Scotland and Northern Ireland should progressively become drier and warmer. Isolated thundery showers are possible but for most it is looking like a barbecue weekend.

Hot start next week

High pressure probably rules the roost early next week but there is uncertainty about exactly where it will be centred. That means there is a good chance of more very warm and fine weather but there are some indications of low pressure systems beginning to encroach from the west. That would open the gates for another blast of heat from southern Europe before a thundery breakdown and cooler conditions return from the west.
