Sunday begins with rain and strong winds affecting much of England and Wales. Through the day the wet and windy weather steadily moves northeastwards and spreads into Scotland. The combination of heavy rain and strong winds will make it feel quite autumnal. Drier conditions return to Northern Ireland this morning and through the second half of the day they spread into western Britain.

Maximum temperatures range from 15C (59F) in the north to 21C (70F) in the south west this afternoon in bright spells. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

On Monday night and into Tuesday another band of rain could spread eastwards across the south but it should quickly turn clear. In the north west showers continue.

Through the middle of the week high pressure builds and becomes the dominant feature of the weather. It should become increasingly dry in the south and east but the north and west may remain more changeable. By Thursday maximum temperatures in south eastern England could be approaching 30C (86F).

The weekend is expected to be fine and very warm in the southern half of the UK. In the north there are likely to be quite a lot of dry spells too but also a greater risk of showery spells of rain at times.
