Hot with storms in the southwest

[Updated 08:30 01/07/2018]

June was a very dry and warm month with the Central England Temperature (CET) finishing close to 2.5C above the average. The warmth looks like continuing for much of the first half of July and parallels with the famous summer of 1976 could start to be made....READ IN FULL

Sunday is off to dry start in most of the UK but there are thundery showers in the south west. Through the day thunderstorms continue in the south west and gradually drift northwards into Wales. Flash flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions at times. The could also be some patchy rain in the far north west but elsewhere sunny periods develop.

In most areas it will be very warm or hot, and in the south temperatures possibly reach 32C (90F). Winds blowing in the from the Atlantic keep the far north significantly cooler. See the rain and lightning radar for the latest view.

Summer forecast overview

Tonight thundery showers in the south west fade away and it becomes dry. In the south it will be balmy and very muggy with temperatures possibly not falling below 20C (68F).

Tomorrow scattered showers affect the south west but elsewhere another fine day is on the way. Sunny periods develop and in the south temperatures again push up towards 32C (90F) locally.

A similar picture is likely on Tuesday but temperatures ease off slightly. In southern counties there may be more cloud at times and in the south west scattered thundery remain a risk.

Mid week and beyond

The middle part of the week brings spells of very warm sunshine but cloudier periods are expected too. A slack area of low pressure to the south of the UK is likely to lead to scattered thundery showers but many places miss them.

Through the second half of the week the Atlantic remains locked out. That means more fine and very warm weather but the chance of thunderstorms remains.
