Settled but less warm after today

[Updated 07:15 15/05/2018]

Fine weather

May has been warm so far with the Central England Temperature (CET) running close to 1.6C about the 30 year average. There will be more settled weather during the rest of the week but temperatures take a dip.

Tuesday start fine across the UK. Sunny spells develop widely this morning but in the north west cloud builds and outbreaks of rain develop. This afternoon the wet weather extends over much of Scotland, north western England and possibly western Wales. Areas to the south and east stay warm and sunny, and in Northern Ireland it becomes brighter and cooler.

Temperatures range from 13C (55F) in the north west to 24C (74F) in central and southern England. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight patchy outbreaks of rain spread southeastwards. In the north west skies clear and it becomes quite chilly.

Tomorrow morning light rain clears from the south east. Sunny spells develop across the UK but there could be quite a lot of cloud cover at times. Temperatures will be down on today's but when the strong May sun puts in an appearance it should feel pleasantly warm.

The rest of the week

By Friday high pressure becomes centred over the north of the UK, so the settled spell continues but upper air temperatures continue to be on the low side. The warmest conditions may be in the north and west where 21C (70F) is possible.

This Saturday sees the royal wedding at Windsor and the FA Cup final at Wembley. The weather looks set fair with spells of warm sunshine. A few computer model runs are indicating the possibility of thicker cloud in the south bringing isolated showers but the risk of that is low.

Sunday should bring more fine weather. However the chance of showers in the south increases and in the north west cloudier skies and patchy outbreaks of rain are expected.

Promising next week?

Current guidance suggests the fine weather will continue early next week in much of the country, but in the north west disturbances from the Atlantic lead to a greater chance of rain. Through the second half of the week more changeable weather could develop but the favoured scenario is for it to remain mostly settled.
