High pressure to hold the fort

[Updated 09:15 13/05/2018]

Fair weather

The week ahead is expected to bring a good deal of fine and warm weather. By the weekend forecast details become uncertain and there is a risk of more changeable conditions returning from the northwest or the south.

Sunday starts with outbreaks of rain is Scotland and the far south east of England. Elsewhere it is dry and through the morning sunny spells develop in the west. It will be cloudier elsewhere but it turns drier in the south east and the remnants of the rain in Scotland steadily pull away northeastwards. The afternoon most areas have dry and bright weather but it probably stays overcast in the far north east.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the west to 18C (64F) in central and southern counties. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight clear spells allow temperatures to drop quickly in the north and west, and in hollows a touch of ground frost is possible. In East Anglia and the south east winds strengthen and thicker cloud perhaps brings showery rain by the morning.

Tomorrow should be dry and fine in much of the country but there probably will be more cloud in Northern Ireland and  western Britain. Also a brisk easterly wind could keep it cooler and damper in the south east. In the sunshine temperatures approach a warm 21C (70F).

High pressure building

Tuesday should be sunny and warm in the south and east, although there is a risk of isolated thundery showers. Across Northern Ireland and western Scotland cloud builds and outbreaks of rain return from the west.

Overnight and into Wednesday patchy outbreaks of rain move southeastwards. Brighter skies follow on from the northwest but it will be cooler than in recent days.

By Thursday high pressure builds and become established over the UK. The upper level air mass will be quite a cool one initially, so although the strong May sun should make it feel pleasant it won't be unusually warm.

During Friday and the weekend the high pressure centre could shift slightly northwards or southwards. That means there should be a lot of fine weather but a chance of rain in the north west or the south.
