East to west split this weekend

[Updated 07:00 12/05/2018]

Wet weather

The weekend looks very mixed with rain in the east but drier weather in the west. Next week high pressure should become more influential and the last third of May could be mostly fine and warm.

Saturday starts wet in the north east but elsewhere it is fine. Through the day cloud spreads northwards and heavy showery rain pushes up over central and eastern England. Elsewhere showers are possible but it should be mostly dry with the best of the sunshine in the north west.

Temperatures range from 13C (55F) in the west to 18C (64F) in the east which will be close to the edge of a Spanish plume. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight the wet weather continues in the east and spreads northwards into Scotland, localised downpours are possible. Northern Ireland and western Britain remain dry.

Tomorrow the changeable theme continues. Central and eastern regions have showery rain in the morning but the west is likely to be mostly dry. Through the afternoon the rain probably becomes confined to the north east of Britain. In overcast areas temperatures remain on the low side but in bright spells it will feel quite warm.

Changeable weather continues

Monday should be dry and bright in much of the country. However in eastern England a brisk easterly wind could keep it  cooler and damper.

On Tuesday spells of warm sunshine develop but in south east there is a risk of thundery showers. Across Northern Ireland and western Scotland cloud builds and outbreaks of rain return from the west.

During Wednesday the rain and cooler air spreads southeastwards but after that high pressure builds in from the west. That brings the prospect of improving weather as we head towards next weekend but the east could remain cooler and cloudier.

Beyond that there are tentative signs of it becoming increasingly fine and warm. It is too early to be confident but some computer model runs show it becoming very warm towards the end of May.
