Unsettled week but quite warm at times

[Updated 07:10 09/04/2018]

The week ahead is expected to bring spells of wet weather as an easterly flow becomes established. However the air mass over the UK will be mild so in sunny spells temperatures climb rapidly, except near the east coast.

Monday starts wet in East Anglia and south eastern England but elsewhere it is mostly dry. Through the day the rain extends across much of England and Wales but it should become lighter in the east this afternoon. The northern half of the UK has a mix of sunny spells and showers.

Maximum temperatures range from 8C (48F) in the wet areas to 15C (59F) in sunnier parts of northern England. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain continues in much of England and Wales and by the end of the night it spreads into Northern Ireland. Scotland remains dry.

Tomorrow wet weather pushes northwards into Scotland and Northern Ireland. Some cloud breaks could form behind it but further bursts of showery rain reach southern counties in the afternoon. It will feel warm in southern and central regions during sunny spells.

Look to the east

During the middle of the week an east or southeasterly flow will be established over the UK. The day to day forecast details  vary but there is the potential for outbreaks of rain to push westwards at times. Near the east coast it stays chilly but southern and western regions should be quite warm in sunny spells.

Weekend and beyond

By Saturday low pressure possibly becomes centred further southwest. If that happens the chance of drier and warmer periods in eastern England will increase as winds back into more of a southerly direction. It is too early to be confident but a number of recent computer model runs have shown temperatures climbing to 21C (70F) during the middle part of April before cooler and more unsettled conditions try to return from the west.

A changeable outlook is shown with the wettest conditions in the southern half of the UK during the first half of the period. There is a bias for above average upper air temperatures to continue for much of the time. Despite that it remains chilly in the east and north east for much of the time due to an easterly flow.
