Unsettled outlook but mild in the south

[Updated 07:15 03/04/2018]

Spring showers

The rest of the week brings a mixed bag of weather. The southern half of the UK will be a lot milder than recently but in the north it stays cold for much of the time.

Tuesday starts murky, mild and damp in southern and central regions. In the north there are persistent outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow.

Through the day brighter skies in the south west extend across much of England and Wales but scattered showers break out. The north remains wet and in Scotland there will be further of sleet and snow, particularly over high ground.

Temperatures in south could reach a very mild 16C (61F) this afternoon but it will be much colder in the north. See the recently upgraded rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight outbreaks of rain spread over much of England and Wales but eastern counties probably stay dry. Wet weather continues in Northern Ireland with further sleet and wet snow in Scotland.

Unsettled outlook

Tomorrow the north has spells of rain and hill snow. Elsewhere heavy and blustery outbreaks of rain become widespread but some sunny intervals develop. The north remains cold but the south will be mild.

Thursday brings a respite as a ridge of high pressure topples over the UK. Most places have sunny periods but during the afternoon cloud builds from the west. Overnight and through Friday another batch of wet weather affects the the north and west. The south and east should be dry and mild.

Forecast details for the weekend are uncertain. A plume of warm air spreads northwards across continental Europe and the edge of it may clip south eastern England. That brings the potential for warmish conditions, however further spells of showery rain are possible.

The GFS forecast chart below shows temperatures reaching 21C (70F) in the Benelux countries and parts of France this Saturday. South eastern England is on the edge of the warmth.

Changeable conditions are shown throughout the 16 day period. After a cold start a wide temperature spread is shown indicating low forecast confidence but there is a weak signal for it to become less cold in the north and warmer in the south. View latest GEFS.
