The Easter period will be unsettled and cold. There is a risk of snow in the north and even in the southern half of the UK precipitation may be wintry at times.

Good Friday starts with showery rain and hill snow in the north. In the south it's a murky picture with wet weather affecting areas southwest of London. This morning outbreaks of rain become more widespread in the south and during the afternoon they extend across much of England and Wales. In northern parts of the UK wintry showers continue and in eastern Scotland they could be quite persistent.

It will be cold with maximum temperatures ranging from 3C (37F) in the north to 8C (46F) in the south. See the recently upgraded rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain continues in central and western areas. Over high ground in Wales and the south west there could be some wet snow. In the north east there will be wintry showers and in places there could be a covering of snow by the morning. Elsewhere it turns drier and clear spells in the north west lead to a frost.

Tomorrow will be mixed with showery rain and a risk of snow in the north. Temperatures remain below the seasonal average but it may feel a little less cold in eastern England.

Easter Sunday and Monday

On Easter Sunday a cold east or southeasterly flow covers the UK. Showers are likely and in the north they could fall as snow even at low levels. During the second half of the day cloud builds across southern and central regions, and outbreaks of rain spread into the south west.

On Bank Holiday Monday outbreaks of heavy rain spread northeastwards. As they bump into cold air they are expected to turn to snow on their leading edge. Significant and disruptive accumulations of snow are possible in central and northern regions.

Through the rest of next week it remains unsettled. Central and northern regions probably stay cold. In the south the focus is on wet weather and close to average temperatures.
