Wednesday starts wet in the south and showery in the north. This morning outbreaks of rain push eastwards across southern and central counties. Over high ground there could be some sleet and wet snow mixed in before drier conditions return from the west. This afternoon the wet weather clears from eastern counties to leave a mix of sunshine and wintry showers.

Tonight it becomes mostly dry and clearing skies lead to a widespread frost. In the south west cloud and rain return by the end of the night.

Good Friday and Easter

Unsettled and cold weather is expected for the Easter period. On Good Friday rain affects much of the country and in Scotland snow is possible. Saturday brings further wet weather but drier periods perhaps develop in the south

This chart below from this morning's GFS 00z run is for 16:00 BST on Easter Sunday. It shows raw easterly winds affecting much of the UK with a risk of snow in the north.

Easter Sunday may bring snow showers to the north. Cold air will be pushing southwards and a keen easterly wind is expected to make it feel raw.

GFS forecast chart

GFS 00z, surface pressure and precipitation, 16:00 BST Fri 30th March

On Bank Holiday Monday outbreaks of rain are expected to spread northeastwards. As they bump into cold air over central and northern Britain they could turn to snow.

Through the rest of next week it remains unsettled. Central and northern regions probably stay cold and there is a risk of snow. In the south milder and wet weather is likely for a time but ensemble models show a strong signal for it to turn colder by mid-week.
