Winter begins to ease its grip

[Updated 07:30 19/03/2018]

Wintry scene

Temperatures will be recovering early this week as high pressure builds across the UK and cuts off the bitterly cold easterly flow. The outlook is changeable and there are indications of wintry weather returning for Easter.

Monday begins dry in most of the country but it is very cold. In southern coastal counties there are still some patchy outbreaks of snow but they will clear this morning. All regions should have a dry and bright afternoon.

Temperatures won't be as low as during the last couple of days but it will still be very cold with a keen northeasterly wind adding to the chill. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

The Arpege chart below shows forecast temperatures for 3pm this afternoon.

This evening a widespread frost returns. During the night temperatures in the east climb above freezing point as coud cover increases and light wintry showers develop.

Tomorrow there could be a few showers but it will be predominantly dry. Temperatures continue to recover but they remain below average for late March.

The south remains dry on Wednesday but it becomes cloudier. In the northern half of the UK wet and windy conditons  return.

Second half of the week

During the second half of the week changeable weather is expected. Despite that the south should be dry for much of the time with wet spells mostly focused on the north. In the north it could be cold enough for snow at times, especially over high ground.

Chilly next week

Next week is looking mixed. A number of recent computer models have shown high pressure building to the northwest in the run up to the Easter period. That could open the gates to a plunge of northerly air and a renewed snow risk. Statistically a White Easter is more likely than a White Christmas in the UK.
