Bitterly cold weather returns this weekend as a Beast from the East weather pattern develops and Siberian air pushes across the UK. There is the potential for disruptive snowfall but the wintry spell won't last as long as the one in late February.

Friday begins with bands of wet weather in central and northern areas but southern counties are mostly dry. Through the day rain continues in the north east and it increasingly turns to sleet and snow as colder air arrives. Elsewhere there will be a mix of sunny spells and heavy showers.

Temperatures range from a cold 3C (37F) in Scotland to a mild and 13C (55F) in the south. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.
Tonight the wet weather in the north east gradually pushes southwestwards with rain turning to snow at all levels. In the north clearer skies return and frost becomes widespread.
Tomorrow starts with patchy outbreaks of sleet and snow in southern and central counties. Through the day snow showers become widespread in the north and east with accumulations of several cms in places. In the afternoon the showers penetrate further west. Temperatures hover close to 0C (32F) in much of the country and a strong easterly wind will make it feel extremely cold.

During tomorrow night a sharp frost develops and snow showers continue. In southern and central regions they may become more persistent leading to further disruptive accumulations of snow. The bitterly cold conditions continue on Sunday with more snow showers in the south and east. The north should be mostly dry and sunny.
Early next week high pressure slowly sink southwards across the UK. Initially it remains cold with widespread and sharp nighttime frosts. By the middle of the week milder air from the southwest gradually begins to return.
The GFS forecast chart below shows a wedge of milder air (indicated by yellow and orange shading) beginning to push in from the west by Wednesday.

In the longer term more changeable weather looks set to return with all areas seeing spells of rain. In the north it could remain cold enough for snow at times.
