Unsettled and often chilly

[Updated 07:15 10/02/2018]

The first third of February has been quite cold with the Central England Temperature (CET) over 1C below the average. More chilly and unsettled weather is expected in the coming days.

Saturday starts dry and frosty in central and eastern England. In the north and west it's a different story with outbreaks of heavy rain and over the hills there is some snow. This morning the rain spreads southeastwards and brighter conditions follow into the north and west. Southern counties have a wet afternoon and further outbreaks of rain push across Northern Ireland and into western Britain by the early evening.

The ICON precipitation forecast chart for 3pm today shows the main band of wet weather affecting much of the south.

Temperatures range from 4C (39F) in northern England to 10C (50F) in the south. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight the wet and windy weather moves away eastwards but wintry showers feed into the north west. It will turn cold as skies clear and a widespread frost develops in the north.

Tomorrow starts bright and cold but through the day wintry showers become widespread. In the north and west they will be frequent and could give accumulating snow. Eastern counties have a good deal of dry and sunny weather.

Next week and beyond

Monday looks chilly but mostly dry as a weak ridge of high pressure builds in from the west. During Tuesday outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow push southeastwards.

The rest of the week brings more unsettled weather. It remains quite cold for much of the time and there is a risk of snow in the north.

A Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event that is currently taking place is expected to disrupts pressure patterns across the Northern Hemisphere during the second half of February. As a result cold blocks of Arctic air could be displaced to mid-latitude locations. That increases the chance of very cold weather in the UK but the latest ensemble computer models continue to show a wide range of possible outcomes.
