Cold and wintry week in prospect

[Updated 09:00 04/02/2018]

Wintry scene

The coming week will be cold with snow in places. During the middle third of February milder intervals are possible but temperatures are expected to remain below the seasonal average for much of the time and there is a risk of further rain and snow.

Sunday begins cold and bright in most of the UK. Through the day central and western areas remain dry and sunny. Eastern counties have wintry showers and at times they could be heavy in the south eastern corner.

Temperatures range from 4C (39F) to 7C (45F). See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight a widespread and sharp frost develops in much of the country. In the south east thicker cloud brings heavy wintry showers and they increasingly turn to snow. Accumulations of several cms in an area stretching eastwards from Greater London are possible by the morning.

The DWD ICON forecast chart for 6am tomorrow morning shows snow showers affecting the south east.

Tomorrow snow showers continue in eastern coastal counties. Elsewhere it should be mostly dry and cold but during the second half of day wet weather spreads into Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

Snow risk on Tuesday

During Tuesday outbreaks of sleet and snow push southeastwards. Disruptive accumulations of snow are possible in places but the precipitation is expected to fragment and become lighter as it moves into central and southern counties. In the north brighter conditions return and wintry showers develop.

The Meteo France Arpgege chart below shows where the outbreaks of snow could be at 12pm on Tuesday.

Mid-week and beyond

Wednesday looks cold with sleet and snow showers in much of the UK. During Thursday a disturbance from the Atlantic pushes southeastwards and brings a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Snow is more likely over high ground and in central and eastern counties.

Cold and showery weather returns for Friday. Next weekend there is a risk of further spells of rain and snow. Conditions for snow are expected to be marginal.

After that computer models suggest temperatures recover to an extent but they remain below the seasonal average as we head towards Valentine's Day. There is a risk of further wintry weather during and beyond the middle of the month.
