Wet Saturday with snow in places

[Updated 07:25 03/02/2018]

Wintry scene

Cold weather becomes established across the UK this weekend. During the first half of next week there is a risk of snow but beyond that the outlook is increasingly mixed as milder air begins to return from the west.

Saturday starts with patchy outbreaks of rain in much of Britain and in the north there is snow in places. The rest of the day brings further wet weather with the greatest risk of snow in the north where accumulations are possible over higher ground. In central and southern regions parameters will be very marginal but rain could turn to snow at times during heavier bursts. Brighter and showery conditions have returned to Northern Ireland and they steadily push into western Scotland this morning.

The forecast chart below shows where rain, sleet and snow is expected to be falling at 3pm today.

Central and eastern areas have a cold day with temperatures ranging from 2C (36F) to 5C (41F) but in the west values will be a couple of degrees higher. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

This evening it turns drier and skies begin to clear. By the end of the night quite a widespread frost is likely to form.

Tomorrow much of the UK has a dry and cold day. In East Anglia and the south eastern corner sleet and snow showers develop and they could be heavy enough to give accumulations in places.

Wintry next week but milder later?

Computer models show cold weather continuing during the first half of next week. However the chance of milder air returning after the mid-week has increased with Atlantic weather fronts expected to progress farther east before running out of momentum.

On Monday sleet and snow showers are likely in eastern England but elsewhere it will be mostly dry. Overnight and through Tuesday outbreaks of rain push southeastwards and turn to snow. Some significant falls of snow are possible but details are uncertain. The Arpege forecast chart shows where the snow could on Tuesday morning.

Wednesday looks cold with sleet and snow showers in much of the UK. During Thursday and through Friday a disturbance from the Atlantic pushes southeastwards. That will have a warm sector embedded in it and a messy mix of rain, sleet and snow is probable.

After that computer models suggest temperatures will recover as we head towards Valentine's Day. Beyond mid-month temperatures are more likely to be below the seasonal average than above it.
