Fine day for much of the UK

Changeable weather continues during the next few days but it will be chilly at times. The prospects for the first half of February are quite uncertain.

Tuesday begins frosty in the southern half of the UK but it is slightly less cold in the north. Most of the UK has a good deal of dry weather today but some patchy rain is likely in the south west and near the south coast. The north west has showers to begin with but this afternoon winds strengthen and more persistent outbreaks of rain arrive.

Temperatures range from 5C (41F) in the north west to 9C (48F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain pushes southeastwards but it becomes increasingly patchy. Colder conditions follow into the north and wintry showers develop.

Tomorrow the north and west have a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers. Central and eastern areas could see a few showers but it should be predominantly dry. It will be chilly. The showery picture continues on Thursday.

A ridge of high pressure pushing in from the west brings the likelihood of a widespread frost on Thursday night. During Friday much of the country should be dry but wet and windy weather returns to the north west. Overnight and through Saturday that clears southeastwards and it turns showery again.

Next week's weather

Mid term forecast confidence is low. An easterly flow now seems unlikely next week with most computer models suggesting we need to look west. Nonetheless it could be quite cold as the jet stream tilts southeastwards and chilly polar maritime air moves down from the northwest. Early on there may be a good deal of dry weather but the risk of showers or more prolonged spells rain increases. At times it could be cold enough for snow in the north.
