Overcast weather

The coming week brings mixed weather and at times it will be quite cold. Forecast confidence for the first half of February remains low.

Sunday begins very mild and there is patchy rain in central and northern areas. Through the rest of the day little changes. In the north west there could be some heavier bursts of rain but southern and eastern areas have a good deal of dry weather. Some brighter spells are likely in southern counties but there will be a lot of cloud around.

Apart from in Northern Scotland a very day is on the way and temperatures in the east could reach 14C (57F) this afternoon. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight outbreaks of rain push into the north west and spread southeastwards. By the morning they will reach Wales and central England with colder and clearer conditions following on behind.

Tomorrow the wet weather moves into southern counties before clearing away during the afternoon. Central and northern regions have a brighter and colder day.

On Tuesday wet and windy weather affects the north west and over the Scottish hills it will be cold enough for snow. There is also a risk of outbreaks of rain in the south.

Chilly and showery mid week

A cold northwesterly air stream on Wednesday and Thursday brings the risk of wintry showers. The forecast chart below illustrates the areas where the showers are most likely.

Meteo France Arpege 00z, 28th Jan, precipitation, 22:00 GMT Wed 31st Jan

During Thursday night and through Friday wet and windy weather returns from the northwest. A generally unsettled and chilly theme continues into the weekend and there is the potential for it to become stormy.

Looking into February

The outlook for the first half of February is uncertain. Most computer models show an unsettled westerly based pattern taking hold, however a few have high pressure building over Scandinavia and very cold air filtering across continental Europe and into the UK. That weather pattern has been very rare in recent decades so confidence in it happening is low.
