Tuesday begins mild and it is wet in the west. Through the morning rain steadily pushes eastwards and brighter conditions return to Northern Ireland. This afternoon there will be some sunshine and it becomes drier in central and eastern Britain. In the west further spells of showery rain develop.

It will be very mild. Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in Scotland to 13C (55F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight a low pressure system moves in from the Atlantic and its centre tracks across the north of the UK. It will bring very wet and windy weather to much of the country. Some computer model runs indicate the potential for damaging wind gusts and the system could be named Storm Georgina later today. Gusts of 80mph are possible in Scotland and another area of strong winds pushing southeastwards could bring gusts of over 70mph to large parts of the country.

The wet weather reaches the south eastern corner by tomorrow morning and showery conditions return elsewhere. The rain may linger in the south east well into the afternoon. in the rest of the country there will be sunny spells but showers develop in the north and west.

Thursday and Friday bring a mix of sunshine and showers. It will be rather cold, especially in the north where the showers increasingly turn to sleet and snow.

By the weekend high pressure starts to build across the southern half of the UK. That brings drier weather to southern counties but in the north a westerly flow continues to bring showers or longer spells of rain in from the Atlantic.

There is uncertainty about where the high pressure will be positioned during the following week. Some computer models show colder conditions developing as it moves northwards but others favour the return of a mild Atlantic flow.
