A named storm this week?

Despite the colder weather in recent days January the Central England Temperature (CET) until the 20th is about 1.2C above the average. The coming week is looking changeable but often quite mild.

Monday begins wet in areas to the south of London and there is some showery rain in the north. Through the day it becomes mostly dry and sunny spells become increasingly widespread.

Temperatures range from 6C (42F) in Scotland to 11C (52F) in the south west. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight cloud and outbreaks of rain extend over much of the west and north. Eastern England remains dry and with clear spells there could be a touch of frost locally.

Tomorrow the rain pushes eastwards. Drier conditions follow for a time but further wet weather moves into the west. It will be very mild but windy.

Is that Storm Georgina on the way?

On Wednesday an area of low pressure is expected to bring wet and windy weather. Severe gales could cause significant problems.

Will the storm be named? Last Thursday's storm wasn't given a name despite it causing a lot of disruption in densely populated parts of the UK. This week it may turn out to be a case of "better safe than sorry" so Wednesday could see the arrival of Georgina which is the next name on the UK Met Office's list for the 2017/18 season.

Thursday and Friday look chilly and showery. In the north showers could fall as sleet or snow.

By the weekend high pressure starts to build across the southern half of the UK. That brings drier weather to southern counties but in the north a westerly flow continues to bring showers or longer spells of rain in from the Atlantic.

There is uncertainty about where the high pressure will be positioned during the following week. Some computer models show colder conditions developing as it moves northwards but others favour the return of a mild Atlantic flow.
