Snow scene

The weekend will bring outbreaks of rain and snow to much of the country. Milder air begins returning from the west tomorrow and next week's outlook is changeable.

Saturday starts with a band of wet weather stretching from Northern Ireland southeastwards across large parts of Wales and southern England. Through the morning and early afternoon the rain gradually pushes southeastwards and in places it could turn to sleet or wet snow. Scotland and much of northern England have a bright day with isolated wintry showers.

Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in Scotland to a mild 11C (52F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

This evening the precipitation in the south moves away to leave a cold and frosty start to the night. By midnight cloud builds in the west and heavy outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland and western Britain. On their leading edge in central and northern areas they are likely to turn to snow.

Tomorrow morning disruptive snow is possible in central and northern regions. Through the day milder air will be pushing  across much of the south and west so snow increasingly becomes restricted to the north east. In England and Wales the rain becomes lighter and patchier during the afternoon.

Changeable next week

The first half of next week looks changeable so all regions can expect spells of rain but also drier interludes. Temperatures in the north should be close to the late January average but the south will be quite mild at times.

During the second half of next week high pressure may bring an increasing chance of drier periods to southern regions. In the north a westerly flow continues to bring a mix of weather in from the Atlantic.
