Showers today but winds easing

[Updated 08:00 18/01/2018]

Stormy weather

Last night's strong winds have led to significant travel disruption in southern and central regions this morning but the worst of the weather has cleared. The next couple of days will be cold and showery but a change is on the way.

Thursday begins bright and blustery. The stormy conditions have now moved away eastwards but last night winds gusted between 70mph and 80mph in large parts of southern and central Britain. The rest of the day brings a mix of sunshine and wintry showers with further accumulations of snow in parts of the north. The heaviest showers this morning will be in the north and west but during the afternoon they spread eastwards.

Temperatures range from 3C (37F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) in the south and a wind chill makes it feel very cold. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight the showers increasingly become confined to northern and western coastal counties. A widespread frost develops and in the Scottish Glens temperatures could plunge below -10C (14F).

Tomorrow brings similar conditions. All regions have bright spells but there will be further wintry showers.

Change on the way this weekend

By Saturday the showers become more scattered but it remains cold. There is a chance of rain and sleet affecting the extreme south on Saturday but most of the UK has a good deal of dry and bright weather. Overnight outbreaks of rain push in from the west but it may stay dry and frosty in the east. Through Sunday the rain continues to advance northeastwards and in the north and parts of the east it is likely to be preceded by a period of heavy snow.

Next week is expected to be quite mixed. Temperatures probably fluctuate around the seasonal average and all areas could have rain at times.
