Tuesday begins overcast in much of the UK and temperatures are generally a few degrees above freezing point. Locally in the north clear intervals overnight have led to a touch of frost.

During the rest of the day sunny intervals are possible in Scotland but for most of the country there will be a lot of cloud that brings drizzle at times. Later this afternoon more persistent outbreaks of rain push into Northern Ireland, Wales and south western England. The Arpege forecast chart below for 5pm today shows where rain is expected.

Tonight the wet weather moves northeastward. Outbreaks of rain will be patchy but there could be a few heavy ones in southern and central England, and over high ground in Scotland snow is likely.

Tomorrow the rain clears from the east to leave mostly dry conditions and and some brighter spells but late in the day there is a risk of it turning wet in the far south west. in the south temperatures will be close to the mid January average but the north stays quite cold.

On Thursday a ridge of high pressure brings drier conditions. Cloud amounts are uncertain but there is a reasonable chance of some bright spells.
