Cold and wintry week on the way

[Updated 08:35 2611/2017]

Fine weather

After a milder blip in the next 24 hours a cold northerly air stream is expected to remain over the UK for  much of the week ahead. Wintry showers will become quite widespread at times.

Sunday starts cold with scattered wintry showers in the north and west. This morning sunny spells develop but there will still be a few showers. During the afternoon a change begins to take place as cloud builds in from the northwest but southern and eastern England remain bright.

Temperatures range from 2C (36F) in Scotland to 7C (45F) in the south. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

This evening wet and windy pushes into the north west and overnight it spreads southeastwards. Snow is likely over high ground in the north. By the end of the night clearer and showery conditions return to northern regions.

Early tomorrow rain and strong winds affect southern counties. The Arpege forecast chart shows wind gusts of over 50mph in the English Channel at 07:00 GMT.

During the course of the day the brighter weather in the north returns southwards to all regions. Wintry showers will develop in the north and west as it turns colder again.

Wintry showers mid-week

During Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the UK remains under a cold northerly air stream. Wintry showers are possible in all regions but most of them are expected in coastal counties and the north. Snow fall to lower levels at times but accumulations are expected to be mostly over high ground. Nighttime frosts become widespread.

Subtle changes by the weekend?

Towards next weekend high pressure may become centred slightly farther southeast in the Atlantic. That would lead to less cold air rolling over the top of it and pushing down across the UK. Weather fronts could also bring rain, possibly preceded by snow in places.

The longer term

During the early part of December a blocked picture is forecast to remain in place across the North Atlantic. That brings the likelihood of quite cold conditions for much of the time and a higher than normal chance of sleet and snow.
