Wednesday is off to a very wet start across Northern Ireland and parts of western Britain. The radar snapshot below shows the rain very clearly with oranges and reds indicating the heaviest bursts. It's also very windy in much of the UK with gusts of around 60mph in North Wales. The rain band marks the boundary between very mild air to the south and colder air to the north.

During the course of the day rain continues to affect northern and western areas, possibly leading to some localised flooding. Over the Scottish mountains there will be snow. It remains very windy with widespread gales. Gusts in exposed parts of Wales possibly exceed 70mph.
Temperatures range from about 4C (39F) in Scotland to a very mild 16C (61F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view. The GFS forecast chart shows the very steep temperature gradient today.

Tonight outbreaks of rain push eastwards across all regions. It remains mild in southern and eastern England but elsewhere colder conditions arrive. In Scotland there will be wintry showers but as skies clear a widespread frost develops.
Tomorrow central and northern areas have a cold day but there will be a good deal of sunshine. Showers affect coastal counties and as they push inland they turn wintry. In the south cloud builds and some outbreaks of rain reach the south west during the afternoon.
Early rain in the south eastern corner on Friday clears away to leave cold and bright conditions but the north has scattered wintry showers. Overnight and during Saturday an area of low pressure tracks eastwards across the English Channel. There has been uncertainty about the details with some computer models showing it pushing a little farther north. That would bring the risk of rain and snow to southern counties. However the latest data from the Meteo France Arpege model shows most of the wet weather remaining to the south of the UK.

Central and northern regions have a cold day with wintry showers. Sunday should be mostly dry and cold, although late in the day patchy rain, sleet or snow could spread into the north west.
On Monday an area of low pressure is expected to move southeastwards across the UK. That brings the likelihood of outbreaks of rain and in the north there is a risk of snow with heavy falls possible over the mountains. There is also a chance of rain turning to snow on the back edge of the system as colder air returns from the north.
