Very wet and windy weather affects much of the UK during the next couple of days. By Thursday colder air will be spreading southwards and the risk of snow could spread southwards this Saturday.

Tuesday starts with a band of heavy rain affecting parts of northern England, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland. That marks the boundary between colder air to the north and much milder conditions to the south.

During the course of the day outbreaks of rain spread across Scotland and into Wales and western England. In Northern Ireland it should turn drier. Central and eastern England remain drier but there will be a lot of cloud cover with just a few breaks.

Tonight winds strengthen across the southern half of the UK and outbreaks of rain spread into Wales and the west. In the north the rain eases off and dry periods develop. It stays very mild in southern and central areas.
Tomorrow a band of heavy rain in western areas extends into northern England and southern Scotland. Northern Ireland and Scotland remain under quite cold air but elsewhere it will be very mild with temperatures in East Anglia possibly reaching 16C (61F). The other feature of the weather will be the strong winds with gales or even severe gales in the west and possibly northern England.

During Thursday brighter conditions return and colder air starts sinking southwards. Showers develop across Scotland and they turn wintry. Through the second half of the day cloud and outbreaks of rain push eastwards across southern counties.
Friday will be cold and bright in the north with wintry showers. In the south further spells of rain are expected.
Forecasts details for the weekend are still uncertain. An area of low pressure deepening to the south west could bring outbreaks of rain to southern and central regions. As colder air filters in from the northwest the rain may turn to snow on its northern and western edges.

Northern regions have a cold day with wintry showers. Sunday is looking cold and mostly dry, although late in the day cloud and patchy rain, sleet or snow could push into the north west.
