Severe gales in the north

[Updated 19:35 02/10/2017]

Stormy weather

The week ahead looks mixed but high pressure should bring a reasonable amount of dry weather to southern and central regions. The monthly forecast favours a predominantly unsettled longer term outlook.

Monday starts showery and very windy in the the north of the UK but southern and central regions are dry. Through the day heavy showers continue in the north. Other areas have a dry morning but during the afternoon outbreaks of rain spread eastwards across counties to the south of London. It will be very windy, especially in the north with severe gales possible this morning.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the north to 17C (63F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight it becomes dry and clear spells form. It remains quite windy.

Tomorrow a few showers affect the north west but the rest of the country has a dry and bright day. It remains blustery, particularly in the north. In sheltered parts of the south east it should feel pleasantly warm.

On Wednesday wet and windy weather pushes southeastwards. The rain reaches southern counties overnight before clearing on Thursday. Cooler and showery conditions follow on as winds turn to a northerly direction.
