Astronomical autumn

Today marks the Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. The meteorological autumn runs from September 1st to November 30th, but the astronomical definition starts today and finishes on the shortest day which is the 21st December.

Friday begins cold and dry across most areas but in Northern Ireland it is wet. Through the day outbreaks of rain push across the north and west, and they are accompanied by strong winds. Central and eastern England remain dry and bright.

Temperatures range from 10C (50F) in the north west to 18C (64F) in the south east. See the the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight patchy spells of rain affect much of the country. Cloudy skies keep it milder than last night. 

Tomorrow starts damp in much of the country. During the morning it becomes mostly dry and sunny spells develop but in the afternoon thicker cloud returns to western areas. Overnight outbreaks of rain push into the west and they continue through Sunday. The east remains fine.

Early next week fine weather is expected in the south and east but the north and west stay under a changeable Atlantic flow. Latest guidance points to unsettled weather slowly pushing eastwards late in the week.
