The meteorological summer ends on a showery note today. The first half of September looks quite changeable but there should be a fair amount of dry weather in the south.

Thursday starts chilly with temperatures widely down into single figures, and in the west there are sharp showers. The rest of the day brings sunny spells but showers steadily spread eastwards. They could be thundery at times with the heaviest ones likely in central and northern regions. Some parts of the south could remain mostly dry.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the north west to 19C (66F) along the south coast. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the showers fade away and clear spells form. It will be another chilly night.

Tomorrow starts off mostly dry. Showers break out again across England and Wales but the heaviest ones become confined to eastern areas. Scotland and Northern Ireland should be mostly dry and bright.

A ridge of high pressure brings fine weather on Saturday. During Sunday outbreaks of rain return from the west, but eastern Britain probably remains dry.

Buzz looks ahead to the meteorological autumn.
