The outlook for August has been issued and the headline is for quite a mixed month. Drier and warmer spells are most likely in the south.

Tuesday begins wet in parts of the north and west but central and eastern England are drier.Through the course of the day heavy showers spread eastwards and at times they become thundery. There will be drier and brighter spells too with the best of them in southern counties.

Temperatures will be similar to recent days, ranging from from 15C (59F) in the north to 21C (70F) in brighter parts of the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight showers fade away and clear spells develop. By the end of the night outbreaks of persistent rain reach the south west.

Tomorrow a spell of wet and windy weather pushes eastwards across much of the UK, making it feel very autumnal. The rain is expected to become heavy in southern and central regions but the north east probably remains dry until quite late in the day.

Thursday brings a mix of sunshine and showers to the north. In the south thicker cloud may bring patchy outbreaks of rain. The showery theme continues on Friday in the north but the south should be drier and warmer.

The weekend details are uncertain at this stage but the latest data suggests the likelihood of the changeable weather continuing. Buzz discusses August and our first tentative look ahead to winter 2017/18 has been issued.
