Heavy rain in the west

[Updated 06:55 21/07/2017]

Car in wet weather

An area of low pressure will bring cool and unsettled weather in the next few days. Early next week drier and warmer conditions could develop for a time but the outlook remains changeable.

Friday starts very wet in Northern Ireland and much of western Britain. Through the rest of the day the rain very slowly edges into central areas and brighter conditions return to Northern Ireland. In Wales and the south west of England the rain will be very heavy and there is a risk of flooding. In contrast eastern England and Scotland have a dry and bright day. It will be windy with gales in the west.

Temperatures range from a very cool 12C (54F) in the wet west to about 22C (72F) in the sunny east. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the band of rain pivots and pushes northeastwards. Showery conditions follow into the south west and Scotland remains dry.

Tomorrow the persistent rain pushes into southern Scotland. Elsewhere some bright spells develop, but showers become heavy and widespread across England and Wales. Showers continue on Sunday and in Scotland there is a risk of further heavy spells of rain. Temperatures will be below par for July and the weather could cause problems for the Open golf at Royal Birkdale.
