Jan 24th this year, we had about 2cm (not that far away had 3-4cm), and this came after snow on 28th Dec 2020 (about the same depth, but only lasted a few days)

There's plenty of other falls I can see recorded in pictures, but they're all thin coverings of 1-4cm.

We've been unlucky with positioning.

24 January didn't see anything where I was then (Failsworth, E Manchester) but the early hours of the 25th did. I only know this from my time-lapses.

Other than that, the days which had snow duirng the first cold spell were 29 December, New Year's Eve, 2nd and 7th January.

Storm Chrstoph on the 20 January was the highlight of last winter though. 48 hours of heavy rain all of a sudden turned to some of the heaviest snow I've seen. In an hour we had nearly 10cm, though most of it was gone by the next morning.

Finished with close to 8cm here on Jan 24th 2021. (click for full sized image)

December 2017 was the deepest snow here since 2013. The Beast in Feb/Mar 2018 produced about 7cm, although it was difficult to measure accurately.

Just re-looked at the pics from last winter and I can see snow falling on:

28th December (and more pics from the 31st with deeper snow lying, 2-3cm)

2nd January ( pics later in the day showing a thin covering, 1cm)

20th January (left 2cm, but I have pics from the 24th in south Warrington, about 3-4cm)

I've none showing snow falling on the 25th (doesn't mean we didn't have snow fall, but it wouldn't have amounted to much)

Thin coverings of 1-3cm have been the order of the day here since the decent falls of Jan & Mar 2013.

With no such event on the cards it seems fleeting Northerlies are our best hope this winter but you can bet that in April when we are looking forward to spring, we have a cold spell

Yes, that's where we seem to be now. Every birder I chat to whilst out is talking about the lack of migratory birds and song birds this year. The Great Garden Bird Watch is soon and it will be interesting to see what the numbers are like. I know for certain that there were mass nesting failures of blue tits and pied flycatchers due to the cold dry April. Has the extinction started and we are drifting into it unwittingly?

Amazing what just a few miles north can do in this Country. I remember looking at the rain that day and hearing of snow in Chelmsford and Braintree although I believe it was short lived?

Yet more absolutely disgusting weather. This winter is so awful it's beyond classification. It's like living on the west coast of Norway with occasional Scilly Isles days thrown in. Nothing remotely resembling what winter in NE Scotland should be like.

Not a single frosty morning yet and more unspeakably vile rubbish today in the form of 3C cold rain and wind

Fourth consecutive December that couldn't even manage 50 hours below freezing. 2017 the only December out of the past 9 that has managed as many as the 77.7 hours below freezing that last April achieved

I suspect that come the end of February,  April will not just be the sunniest month in the past 12 but also the month with the most frosts, the highest frost duration, the lowest mean min and the most snow days. Utterly dire beyond words

Every single December between 2005 and 2012 recorded at least 7 frosts whereas only 2014 and 2017 have done so since then. Every December between 2005 and 2012 recorded a minimum of at least -3.6C whereas only 2014, 2017 and 2018 have done so since then.

These are the lowest temperatures recorded for the past three Decembers:

2019: -2.2C

2020: -2.2C

2021: -2.2C

Exactly the same pitiful value to the same decimal place every single year. Nothing speaks more about the appalling lack of variation in this mind-numbing era of never ending rot than that. It's incredulous. If a weather station was set up in a buoy at the equator in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean equidistant from Brazil and Africa I'd be amazed if even that would record the exact same value for a minimum temperature for the same month three years running

Worse still 2015 recorded -2.0C and 2016 -2.3C so that's 5 out of the last 7 Decembers that have recorded almost the same minimum

November 2019 recorded -3.0C so the only other years, in the past 16, when it has got this far through the Autumn/Winter without dropping below -2.2C were 2015/16 and last year

It just beggars belief when last April recorded -3.4C and 5 out of 7 Decembers can't come within a degree of that. Also -3.5C reached in March 2021 which was a very mild March

If there's ice in November will bear a duck etc...

This year's variation for the south

If there's snow in November will cover a beetle
The rest of the winter will be week and feeble

The coldest night temp I have recorded so far this winter is 0.6c and that was briefly. Nearly everyday the temp has reached above 10c. I know this is the mildest part of the UK but the changes in the weather over recent years is noticeable.
The Isles of Scilly use to produce flowers through Jan/Feb and on the mainland the daffodils would bloom around late Feb early March about a month earlier than the rest of the UK. The daffodils are already out in my area, as is the cherry blossom. My fear is that March will be a cold raw month and kill off all the buds and new growth.

The current high pressure forecast for the next week or so will give us 10-12c by day and night temps of between 7-9c. The sea temp is still warm at 12c in the bays around here to allow the air to cool.

I've got some special Scilly daffodils here, bought the bulbs when I was over there many years ago. They're not in flower yet, but the flower heads are swelling day by day... it won't be long. It always raises a few eyebrows when people see them!

As for winter itself, the less said about it the better really. As usual it's been utterly unremarkable without even a sniff of snow so far down here. At least there have been three air frosts, I guess, but it's a poor show considering we're nearly halfway through the season!

The islands are beautiful at this time of year as the fields are full of scented daffodils in flower (usually Soleil d'or).

The main season is on the wane already though - a lot are picked and packed for the Christmas period.

I've picked and packed a fair few myself in the past - cold,  hard work which does your back in. There's a real skill to it which I could never master.

Mind you there's nothing to beat being out in a sheltered field on a warm, sunny January day - I picked in my T-shirt many times.

Only five minutes of falling snow yesterday. Could do with a whole day of it.

Had enough of winter now, I just want spring to come. We want to start getting to work on the garden as it needs doing.

Saying that, no doubt come April, winter will arrive just to laugh in our faces...

I notice a lot of people was walking and cycling today in sunshine so it like everyone is fed up with this boring winter and want to get Spring early.  Still hope not a repeat of cold Spring and summer this year.

Go out and do it then! There's no law against gardening in winter.

I spent a good couple of hours tidying up at the weekend, plenty more of that to come. (The garden waste bin is now full of offcuts of shrubs and bushes, just as well collection day is today!)
