I've just read that the system responsible for that has been officially named as Storm Aurore by Météo-France (the French equivalent of our own UK Met Office).

Well that was some wild weather last night. Not the night to have a north facing loft bedroom overlooking a valley. There was a jet washer on our window for a good couple of hours after midnight, and some torrential rain for the four hours before that, with the occasional bolt of lightning thrown in. Kept going until 4ish, so 7 or 8 hours in all. Would love to know our rain total, but wouldn't be surprised if it were 50mm ish.

101.2mm now with measurable rain on 17/21 days.

2006 and 2011 each had 23 days with measurable rain so looks like this mild, soggy catstrophe could even beat those ghastly mild, soggy horrors

In the last 24 hours, there has been a total of 2.0 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, but just 0.6 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank and so, our struggle to get any meaningful rainfall totals continues despite some locally very heavy rain falling at times.

That takes this month's total to 59.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 70.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that another 5.8 mm of rain still needs to fall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

I did say not too long ago that we might end up struggling to meet that target and with just five days left of this month after today, that is now turning out to be the case.

Whilst the general outlook across the UK for the rest of this month continues to look unsettled, the 10 day totals on many of the models including the GFS, and still showing it to be drier than average here and across the east of Scotland in general.

Because of that, we can now probably safely say that the final total at Edinburgh Gogarbank for this month now has virtually no chance of reaching or exceeding the 1981-2010 October average for that particular station, and it wouldn't even surprise me if we fail to even get that small amount (shown above) which is required for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh to be wetter than average in the end, in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank (shown as station 1 below) and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (shown below as station 2) is as follows:

Total Amount Since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 2.2 mm at station 1, 1.2 mm at station 2 (as at 8am BST this morning (07:00 UTC))

Total For This Month So Far: 61.6 mm (72.9 % of LTA) at station 1, 71.2 mm (94.2 % of LTA) at station 2

Number of Dry Days During This Month So Far: 7 at station 1, 6 at station 7

This means that a total of 4.6 mm of rain or more, still needs to fall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

However, there has now been more official rain days during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1981-2010 October average which means that this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of rain days regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.
