The 8 week SE Kent wet season has commenced in true and timely style (it normally runs late September until late November) as increasingly cool uppers interact with the still relatively warm SST's on onshore prevailing SW'ly wind days.

62.0mm so far this month.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank (shown as station 1 below) and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (shown below as station 2) is as follows:

24 Hour Total up to 09:00 (10:00 BST) this morning: 4.8 mm at station 1, 4.4 mm at station 2

That isn't much compared to what everyone else is getting, but it is currently raining here in Edinburgh as I write as the main area of rain has pivoted around as the area of low pressure over the North Sea continues to move northwards, with that rain having then moved in here from the east after being just to our SE for several hours earlier on.

Total For This Month So Far: 11.0 mm (13.0 % of LTA) at station 1, 8.0 mm (10.6 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Month So Far: 2 (15.6 % of LTA) at station 1, 3 (24.2 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During  This Month So Far: 1 at station 1, 1 at station 2

Our totals continue to be nowhere near as much as what everyone else is getting but it now looks as though we are going to get something during the next 24 hours from the latest area of rain. In addition to that, there is some model output which is suggesting that we could get some rain from the remnants of Hurricane Sam later on this week.

The latest indications are that it is really only Scotland and possibly NW England which is likely to see that rain. That comes with the caveat that SE Scotland could largely miss out on that with the north and west of Scotland getting nearly all of that rainfall but if we do get anything from that at all, that could help to even out these rainfall totals across the UK as a whole by a bit.

Total For This Autumn So Far: 66.0 mm (30.5 % of LTA) at station 1, 64.0 mm (29.6 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Autumn So Far: 14 (38.7 % of LTA) at station 1, 14 (41.4 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Autumn So Far: 16 at station 1, 15 at station 2

Total Amount During This Year So Far: 555.8 mm (73.7 % of LTA) at station 1, 545.6 mm (77.5 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Year So Far: 90 (65.5 % of LTA) at station 1, 96 (77.3 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Year So Far: 143 at station 1, 140 at station 2

LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at the particular station in question.

All of this data has been taken from SEPA with each observation day starting and ending on 09:00 UTC on each day.

Monthly total now up to 35.4mm, not far off September's 42.6mm. We've had 64.8mm in the last 9 days.

25mm down here last night and monthly total sitting at 79mm.

At 70 mm barely 5 days into this month, I've already exceeded the average rainfall for October! The upcoming dry spell couldn't be more welcomed.

I think you need to check Ian but 70mm used to be the average in October. These days its nearer 114mm !

In recent years we really have developed our very own 'wet season'

Seems that way here as well

We have had 60mm so far in the first 5 days of October and in 2020 the total here for that 5 days was 80mm

I have the Kew Gardens daily rainfall record since 1871 and for the 1st 5 days of the month 2020 and 2021 are numbers 1 and 2

Can really tell where the clouds hovered over south-east scotland this afternoon, less than 10mm at edinburgh botanics and gogarbank, but 20+mm at swanston in south edinburgh, and 35+mm at bush over the bypass. More the further south and east - abbey st bathans in berwickshire reporting 75mm in 24hours

The rain risk here in Scotland from the remnants of Hurricane Sam later on this week appear to have now been downgraded somewhat on the latest model output so with high pressure being forecast to build from the south after that, this is now looking set to be yet another dry month here in NW Edinburgh at least.

Yet more evidence that we generally, just don't get "interesting" weather in this part of Edinburgh where I live even if the weather is more interesting elsewhere within Edinburgh itself (that in itself, isn't exactly something which happens as often as it does elsewhere in the UK).

The warm front associated with ex-Hurricane Sam brought a total of 0.6 mm of rain to Edinburgh Gogarbank during last night, and 1.2 mm of rain to the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This isn't enough to merit a full report, but that takes this month's total to 21.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 21.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Once again an unadulterated horror show is in full swing.

An utterly ridiculous 54.4mm for the REVOLTING first week of October

71.0mm between the 27th September and 7th October

Third year in a row that this period has been ridiculously wet

30th September - 5th October 2020: 90.0mm

24th September - 7th October 2019: 68.6mm

October was always the wettest month of the year but never on this scale of abject horror year-in-year out
