Here in Edinburgh, today has started off with something which we don't tend to see very often these days, and that is a bright and sunny start to the day.

However, it is also a lot cooler than of late and the temperature at 6am this morning was only at around 9°C here in Edinburgh, with a return to that nightmare scenario of single figures summer temperatures.

Overjoyed to wake up to clear blue skies and sun with no sign of North Sea muck.

Having breakfast in the garden with temperature up to 17.0C following the coldest night of the month. Min of 7.6C was only the second in single figures reflecting the extreme cloudiness.

Much more in the way of cloud than of late but it is actually brightening up as I type and somehow we are avoiding the showery stuff that are currently circulating over the South East (only had three droplets this morning).

A comfortable 20.7 C, 84% h and calm winds. 0.0 mm of rain.

After a cool start to today here in Edinburgh with single figures temperatures, it has now warmed up nicely here with the temperature at 2pm this afternoon back up to around 20°C.

In addition to that, a total of 6.8 hours of sunshine was recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 2pm this afternoon, leaving us needing a total of just another 19.6 or more hours of sunshine to be recorded there between now and the end of this month, in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average overall at that particular station.

That was looking like a very unlikely scenario after the first week or so of this month, and there is still exactly another week left of this month after today.

Meanwhile the nice Summer continues up north. After a week long heatwave in the Lakes 25-30C I'm now in Wharfedale and we've had 2 bright dry days and 21 C.

Mostly light showers here at the moment, currently sat on 23.4mm of rain for the day after some heavy downpours earlier with the odd rumble of thunder.

Went for a jaunt on the bike earlier and by the time I'd got 5 miles or so from home the roads were mostly dry - loop took me down past Woodchurch and it was fairly sunny down there, with totally dry roads and it wasn't until I got back towards Twells there were more showers again. I'm guessing on that basis the eastern parts of Kent probably had a fairly reasonable day!
