Even in the far south, six white frosts this month, more than in the whole of the preceding winter

5 air frosts here this month that have been recorded on the following mornings:

6th, 7th, 12th, 13th and 14th.

Snow has been observed falling on 3 days.

The mean temperature this month now stands at 5.8c (on a par with February's return of 5.8).

Mean monthly this year:

Jan 4.5c

Feb 5.8c

Mar 7.2c

April 5.8c

My grass is yet to be cut this year. Normally this takes place in around mid March. The previous latest cut took place on the 12th April 2008.

It will probably need its first cut this weekend though.

In the past week there's been snow (of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it-falling variety), four air frosts (just squeaked another one last night, at -0.1C), five days in double figures and a good deal of warm sunshine, something alluded to in today's MetO forecast:

Feeling warm in direct sunshine, otherwise cool

From a coldie point of view, four air frosts and three days of snow falling (albeit tiny amounts) makes it a noteworthy April.

We've only had 2 air frost's here which isn't unusual for April, but should we get anymore going forward in the month it would be unusual as we have now almost past mid month. April is a wild month 🤪

Frost is still on the card's for the region but then again out there in the sticks or on the downs frost  can happen as late as May.

Today i have a feeling might bring us our first clap of thunder of the season, almost slack winds and intermittent heavy rain with big splots from seemingly stationary developing showers.

Another way of looking at how cold this month has been here in Edinburgh, is to look at the temperature anomalies for this month and in this case, I have chosen Edinburgh Gogarbank for that.

As of 14 April 2021, the average temperature for this month was 4.4°C, which is 3.5°C below the 1981-2010 April average for that particular station.

Daytime temperatures have been slowly improving over recent days, and the average maximum temperature during this month so far is 9.8°C as of 14 April, which is only 1.8°C below our 1981-2010 April average.

As I have already said in this thread though, we are still getting a lot of air frosts just now and as of 14 April 2021, the average minimum temperature was -1.1°C which is a massive 5.2°C colder than the 1981-2010 April average for that particular station.

There has been some hints in the model output that the second half of this month could warm up a bit and we saw during February how even with a very cold first half of any month, that month as a whole can very easily still end up being warmer than average in the end as a result.

As far as this month is concerned, there is still an outside chance of our daytime maximum temperatures getting up to slightly above average in the end. However, there is still a risk of further air frosts (or at the very least, some further ground frosts) and that was something which didn't happen during February. Because of that, this month is unlikely to end up being anything else but colder than average.

That is particularly true with regards to our night-time minimum temperatures and if we continue to see a sub-zero average minimum temperature when we get to the end of this month, that will be very remarkable indeed for this far into the year, especially as we are now halfway through what is supposed to be our meteorological "spring".

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Even with the so called double day time figures it's felt uncomfortable here with the dry air. As soon as you're out of the sun it feels, well chilly.

At least six air frosts this April here and the vegetation growth more or less on hold. The late Blackthorn winter continues apace.

Another frost in Solihull last night, haven't kept count of how many but its certainly been a long stretch and possibly longer than any other winter month. Fascinating contrasts really. At least we're rewarded with starry skies and clear skies.

That's quite a run of hard frosts now. The last 6 days in particular. Unusual in April even for the 'lower' Highlands!

Day 16....and the lowest air minimum of the stretch. Lowest April temperature at this station since it opened in 1989.

Looking touch and go whether or not we get one more tonight.

A phenomenal run, not just the longevity but that fact the frosts are getting harder as April progresses. The highest minimum in the past week has been -4.9c!  You’d be pressed to find such a run even in a cold winter month!

Very cold yet again across the south this morning. Not that unusual to get -4C in mid April but generally that only happens once or twice at most in any given year. This year is quite unusual for the number of air frosts.

Farnborough -4.1C

Benson -5.1C

Benson has recorded 10 air frosts this month with six being below -4C

Bournemouth airport has recorded 11 air frosts all of which have been -2C or lower. This includes one stretch of 6 days unbroken and another of 5 days. Another night just missed out with a minimum of 0.1C.

Yes I haven’t been counting the frosts but I’d say there have been more frosts than not this month so far. And three (possibly four?) days of snow falling, plus an inch of settled snow last Monday. Glorious warm sunshine today though.

More amazing stats! As mentioned in the April CET thread, it's been just about bearable because of the largely dry and increasingly sunny weather.
