So chilly today with convective infill and a temperature of just 6.4c and a dewpoint of -3.9c.

We briefly touched 7.5c at 11.30 am before the cloud filled in.

Expecting to drop below freezing tonight and then again at the weekend. Saturday daytime looks pretty damp here so could well be some ice around that night.

As at 6am this morning, the temperature at Edinburgh Airport was down to -5°C at Edinburgh Airport which is just ridiculously cold for this time of the year.

Even at my other local stations, the temperature at 8am this morning was -3.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and -3.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This makes last night our coldest night since 12 February 2021.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

-9.4C at Tulloch Bridge last night which I think equals the daily record minimum set in 1958. Somewhere else not on the regular reporting list may have beaten it.

According to Lee (Highlandweather) the lowest on his network was -10.2C at Roberton in the Scottish Borders.

-8 widely over inland North Yorks frost hollows and pennine dales
Not just the odd night either most of April has been similarly plagued.

Lee has an extensive and pretty accurate network of stations now which he keeps adding to. Of course these are not accepted by the Meto which is a shame as I'm sure they could be verified for approval should anyone be bothered.

Unlike everywhere else, not a single cold night of note here due to the ridiculous and tedious wind that never relents

Lowest this month has been -3.4C which is some way off the local record of -6.7C back in 1968 when the wind actually dropped out at night.

The only thing of note has been the sequence of air frosts - 8 in a row now which is the longest run at any time of year since January 2016. Puts the joke winters of recent years into persepective which have been noted only for stupefying runs of frost-free nights

The temperature at Benson fell from 6.4C at 1900 this evening to -0.1C at 2000

What is the highest number of air frosts that people have recorded in April?

My maximum is 7 in both 1986 and 1989. Both years have some missing data so the total could have been higher. I don't have any records before 1986. Back then I was in a colder, more rural location than I am today, albeit only 30 miles away.

So far this month I have recorded 5 air frosts (one was -0.1C so only just qualified). The next four nights all hold the possibility of getting close to or below zero. So I could potentially see 8 air frosts this month at least. Very unusual for April this far south. No record low temperature for April as the lowest so far is -2.1C. I have recorded below -4C in April before.

Currently, the mean temperature for April is running 3.4C below average, 1.3C below March and only 0.5C above February.

Five air frosts so far this April for me too, another night at 0.1 deg C, and two at 0.2 deg C. Lowest recorded temperature was on the morning of the 7th, with my WS measuring -6.8 deg C - I'm in a rural valley, so lose the sun 30 minutes earlier than villages around us, so I think that's plausible. Remarkable month.

Three frosts here, which is unusual in April... it's -1C out there at the moment. You would normally expect zero or one air frost here in April!

Looking back at the winter half of the year, there's been the following number of air frosts per month in 2020-2021.

October: 0
November: 0
December: 4
January: 10
February: 8
March: 2
April: 3

Oddly, Manchester Airport recorded only 1 air frost during April 1986

Here in Edinburgh, we have only had an air frost during the last 4 nights in a row but the last 9 nights in a row have given us a ground frost at the very least.

As of 10am this morning, we have had a total of 9 official air frosts at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this month so far which is more than four times the number of air frosts which we had during the entire month of March, even though we still haven't yet reached the halfway stage of this month.

In addition to that, we have already had more air frosts during this month than what we had during December and February which means that we have had more air frosts during this month than what we had during any of the winter months with the exception of January (which was our only really cold winter month), even though we had far more air frosts during December and February than what we had in those same months during the winter of 2019/20 because both of those months were still milder than average overall during last winter).

5/6 last 6 day's have seen double figure daytime maxes. Certainly nothing untoward for early April down this way. We had a frost the other night, and a few wintry showers on Monday.

It feels like a much more interesting month than normal... and we're not even halfway through yet!

In the past week there's been snow (of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it-falling variety), four air frosts (just squeaked another one last night, at -0.1C), five days in double figures and a good deal of warm sunshine, something alluded to in today's MetO forecast:

Feeling warm in direct sunshine, otherwise cool

From a coldie point of view, four air frosts and three days of snow falling (albeit tiny amounts) makes it a noteworthy April.
