No air frost, but it's another in a long string of 2-3C nights here. I'm throroughly enjoying this (makes sleeping at night a doddle) but it can't last forever!

An official air frost has just been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank and what is interesting here is that the 1981-2010 May average for the number of air frosts at that particular station is just 0.9 days over the course of the entire month.

This means that even though we are only on the second day of this month as I write with more than 4 weeks to go until the end of the month, this month will now already be going down as being frostier than average overall at Edinburgh Gogarbank, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

The result of this is that this month is already our second frostier than average month in a row, and our third frostier than average month of this year (the other one was back in January). This is also the second year in a row where May has been frostier than average.

That in turn, makes it hard to believe that we are only just over four weeks away from the start of the meteorological summer.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Date record for 6th May is apparently -5.6C, is there a chance of somewhere up north / Scotland breaking that tonight? (I assume the night of the 5th/6th counts as the 6th right?)

According to the synoptic reports the minimum at Eskdalemuir up to 0600 GMT was -5.5C. By this time the temp was rising so it's probably unlikely that the official minimum read at 0900 GMT would have recorded anything lower.

If so then close but no cigar!

I was scraping the car this morning at 5am with a low of 0.8c.

One more cold night and then something a little less noteworthy thereafter.

Very, very unusually there was a ground frost on the Isles of Scilly this morning!!

It was cold enough for ice to form on top of the water butt in the garden where we're staying.

Currently living at roughly 65m asl North of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Formerly of, Birdlip, highest village in the Cotswolds and snow heaven in winter; Hawkinge in Kent - roof of the South downs and Isles of Scilly, paradise in the UK.
