This year is a shocker.

I was reading through this thread and thinking - this can't be right. Took me a few posts to realise it was last year!

I could have tolerated this year more had the background signals been less favourable, I had such high hopes, still time for change but I’m not feeling it.

That being said even last year wasn’t great IMBY. This even was very much west London.

It brought approx 7cm of snow here which is about 25 miles northwest of central London.

Yes but it never delivered anything except dustings and flurries or flakes away from eastern area's.

UK is in a snow drought and this will continue sadly.

Spring Sun Winter Dread

Where I was then (same town as Brian G) Jan 24th was the highlight of the winter from a snow perspective.
2nd week of Feb was much hyped and cold enough but only delivered a few disappointing grains. Spring then appeared from nowhere a week later !

This confused me for a while until I noticed the year in the date! I got some pics from this event in my FB memories, managed to get out sledging with the kids on the common, although the snow cover was rather thin and we ended up in a load of mud and slush by the end!

Yes the Feb spell was a let down. The picture below was taken on 08/02/2021.

Last winter was a decent and eventful winter, good to see a few people had some memorable weather.  January was full of interest and events from start to finish.

Whilst not the deepest, my favourite here last year was 8th January. Incredible to see snow pile up through the day, much more than forecast.

What made it so special was how lucky we were, North Leeds/Harrogate plastered whereas just a few miles South there was hardly anything. Plus the depth was unexpected and not well forecast.

When this EURO 4 chart came out about 11.30am , combined with looking out the window at the snow depth piling up,  just knew we were on the cusp of something special.  This chart shows 10-15cmish here and 20cm plus towards Harrogate.  We ended up with 13cm , building up through the day . This area of Leeds was practicable cut off by late afternoon with cars really struggling and anyone at work finding it very difficult to get home.  A lot of people travelling home from Leeds will have seen nothing until they got within a couple of miles of here , then finding themselves unable to move.  The snow cleared in the evening, then froze and we had a sunny day with no thaw and snow laden trees to follow. Perfect.

Then just 6 days later an even deeper event.  The event got upgraded from almost nothing a few days before to significant snow event. This was the Euro 4 for the morning showing something special once again.

Rain turned to snow from the East just before dawn, the front just sat there all day, and we ended up with 17cm building again during daylight hours followed by a cold night and a perfect sunny thaw free day again the next day.  Again cars were abandoned and it caused chaos due to the build up in daylight hours.

.. and not just in the south of Edinburgh either, as we had quite a good dumping at that time here in the north of Edinburgh where I am, and that doesn't happen very often.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
