Impressive snowfall amounts in central England i.e Midlands of course and quite a fair bit but it was mainly and event for the midlands or higher ground of the S.
Nope, altitude had very little to do with it, largely down to the intensity of the snowfall. For example it's unusual to see Reading, on the Thames, get considerably more snow than the Chilterns just north of it - that was down to chance more than anything.
Other than London, the snow depth bore no relation to altitude, the bigger factor was proximity to the coast, as well as mixing of warmer air from the sea over Sussex and Kent.
