2020 CET mean is the third warmest on record

2020 10.76C (taking an average of each month as the Met Office figures do or 10.75C if you take a daily mean)

2006 10.87C

2014 10.95C

Here are the charts for December. A very average month overall but that hides some large variations during the month

Annual CET competition

Here is the final competition table for 2020. No surprise that Darren S is the runaway winner with a cumulative error of just 6.23C. Not quite as good as the record low of 5.88C set by Gusty last year. Congratulations to Darren.

Stormchaser is in second place with a figure of 7.62C. Spring Sun Winter Dread is third.

This year's wooden spoon goes to Grandad

Many thanks to everyone who took part in the competition this year. We are already up and running for 2021.

Congratulations Darren for your comprehensive victory this year. You were in pole position for most of the year so it is well deserved. In fact the top 3 all spent more months in their respective final positions than other positions, so well done too to Stormchaser and SSWD. I notice that Hungry Tiger made a great late surge to get him into 4th place too.

Personally, I couldn't quite nail enough accuracy to get myself into the top 3 but now we can all wipe the slate clean and try again in 2021.

Finally, a huge thanks to Global for persevering with this great competition. I know it has been a difficult year for you, as for many people on this forum.

Please could you post year end positions in years past? EDIT: Found the thread from the same time last year, but all the image links in it are broken  https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/twocommunity/default.aspx?g=posts&t=20562&p=6

Well done Darren S and thank you GW for running the comp so well,
This year while disastrous on just about every metric imaginable, did rather suit me for weather predicting as it provided a vindication of my “slightly above average” biased predictions strategy.
Just like the record breaking 2014 it was a year that provided consistently warmer than average months but not much in the way of truly exceptional ones... no surprise that this consistency earned it a place in the top 3 of hottest years ever for the CET.

We didn't have too many entries to the annual CET competition last year. However, Windy Willow was the closest with 10.77C compared to the actual outcome of 10.75C. Congratulations to Windy Willow. Bolty was a close second with 10.71C.

Great stats there GW and appreciate all the effort that goes into producing them.

Another warm year has passed and apart from the extreme heat in August a CET of 10.76 is very impressive.

Don`t know if there is going to be another competition to guess 2021`s CET but i have a hunch this is going to be a very cold year compared to the past 10 years and recon the annual CET or 2021 could be as much as 1.5c or more lower last year. A sub 10c year is imo a dead cert in 2021 with an especially cold summer.

Thank you GW for all the updates, statistics and outlooks .

I'm slightly amazed that I clawed my way up to 2nd place in the end. A bit cross with Darren S for giving the rest of us no chance .

2021 looks to have a much more challenging start, with a wide range of opening scores likely. It seems I've unwittingly gone all-in, drama much!
