We are now into a brand new month (it's hard to believe that we are halfway through 2020 already) and yet, this rather miserable and poor excuse for a so-called "summer" goes on as this morning has got off to a thoroughly wet and miserable start with heavy and at times, torrential rain.

The result of this is that since the official observation month of June doesn't end until 10am (09:00 UTC) this morning, June will now go down as being wetter than average at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Last night's overnight temperature was 10.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 10.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 7am this morning was around 12°C here in Edinburgh.

The heavy rain from earlier on has gone, but it remains very dull and dismal with light rain and drizzle at times with the result that nothing in the way of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 11am this morning.

It hasn't taken long for us to get our first recorded rainfall of this month though, although that has only added up to a measly 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 11am this morning, along with nothing at all at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

However, that ill fated wind from off the North Sea is back yet again and with that, has come a lot of easterly muck from off the North Sea.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 11am this morning was just a rather cool 13°C.

One sharp shower through here a couple of hours ago. Since then they have stayed north of Sheffield, with some brightness poking through at times. Slack conditions and pleasantly warm, though quite muggy - a high of 19C earlier with humidity in the 70s.

Turned out to be a fair and cheerful day with good sunny spells here at Folkestone but there has been some rain last night (1.4 mm since the station's usual 12 am reset). Currently 19.2 c & 78% h from a peak of 20 c at 11 am.

Similar story here. A pleasant afternoon. Plenty of cloud about, but the gaps have been in the right places!

That makes it hard to believe as well, that this coming weekend will mark the beginning of the Edinburgh Trades fortnight (not that any of us will be able to go very far this year of course, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic).

Anyway, the drizzle has gone from here, but there is still a cold wind blowing straight in from off the North Sea and it remains very dull and dismal.

The result of this is that today is now looking certain to go down as the first completely sunless day of this month already, at Edinburgh Gogarbank and our fourth sunless day of this so-called "summer".

As for the drizzle, that has resulted in a total of 0.8 mm of rain being recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (which have now just re-opened to the public as from today, albeit to only a limited number of people at any time) since 10am (09:00 UTC) this morning.

Once again though as was the case this morning, there is still no rainfall at all being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank just now.

As for the temperatures, this is just getting a bit ridiculous now, as today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was just 12.9°C which is just absolutely abysmal when you consider that we are now into what is supposed to be high "summer", and what should be the warmest month of the year on average, according to the 1981-2010 averages (to be honest, I've seen higher temperatures than that before at Christmas).

That makes today, our second coldest day of this so-called "summer" (if we can even call it that now) with only 13 June 2020 being slightly colder than that.

However, the temperature at 7pm this evening was still close to 13°C here in Edinburgh.

Poor start to July. Drizzle and cloud most of the day. Sun came out in the late afternoon with a sunny evening following but even then the temperature struggled to only 14.6C.

Lerwick temperatures with even less sunshine and it's down to 9.8C already
