Tropical Depression no 22 has developed in the Gulf of Mexico - taking an unusual track:

Only forecast to become a tropical storm - but we have heard that before! - Laura and Sally were forecast to stay as tropical storms and both ended up as hurricanes.

Meanwhile Teddy is now a cat 4 storm and will head to east of Bermuda and perhaps straight to Nova Scotia and then Newfoundland - maybe St John's could be in the firing line as Teddy still maintains it's hurricane strength well past/north of Bermuda!?

What was forecast (yesterday) to be a major cat 3 or above to be a direct hit to Bermuda from now looks as if it would miss Bermuda altogether!

The Atlantic keeps on giving ..

Teddy to savage Canadian Maritimes (NHC has is making landfall as a cat 1 hurricane in Nova Scotia) and BBC weather blames it for diverting the jststream to give us a deep low next weekend

Wilfred in mid Atlantic not doing much

Subtropical Storm Alpha menacing Portugal (the SS title is new on me, I didn't realise it would come in the NHC's purview)

Tropical Storm Beta exceeding early expectations and now forecast to run along just offshore of the Texas Coast while maintaining hurricane status - looks as if wind, storm surge ad rain will all be serious

Something new developing by the Azores (50% chance of development but little movement)

And there's always something moving out od W Africa which might eventually develop.

Beta seems to have come out of nowhere and forecast has changed rapidly over the last few days. Potential rain maker for Texas like Harvey in 2017

Teddy is going to bugger up our Summer! Well it was good while it lasted and now central heating will have to come on, assuming its working after all this time!

So we've now run into the Greek alphabet, becoming only the second season in history to do so. And it's much earlier too. In 2005, Tropical Storm Alpha didn't form until 22 October, so it's very likely this will be the most active season in history now.

That's another thing for 2020 to cross off the list!

Have you seen the latest track for Beta? Very unusual isn't it?

Worst case scenario in terms of flooding

Clearest sign of out of control climate change yet, alongside the melting on greenland

An ACE value if 90 would have it in the “near normal category” and it would need to be over 180 to be in the top ten most active. It has been a very active season in terms of the number of storms but not in terms of their intensity.

Looking increasingly like paulette might re-spawn in the next few hours.

Don't know.. they have in past used the first names of depressions that have reformed.

NHC has revived the name Paulette and it is doing a little pirouette off SW Portugal

Teddy on course for Nova Scotia, warm there but displacing cold air in our direction; Beta raining hard on the Texas/Louisiana coast and a disturbance of interest in the Straits of Florida -speculation on it moving first south and then returning north to haunt Florida,

Teddy still 100mph. Impressive to have maintained itself this long

What is the NHC playing at?

Took them ages to name Alpha, yet Teddy and Paulette are fully tropical?

Teddy does not look tropical at all, its a posttropical cyclone.

Paulette is possibly barely tropical or subtropical. Very shallow convection, hard to justify it.

Its clearly not tropical anymore. I'm at a loss as to why it still has its Hurricane Status.

Its a really really strong extratropical cyclone.

I suppose they may feel dubious about calling a Cat2 storm extratropical. I admit its very rare for a storm that strong to be ET but it isn't unheard of.

Had another look at Teddy.

Not remotely tropical looking.

Although clearly an absolute beast of a storm.

Very well defined fronts, cold core structure, extreme wind shear.

Why is this still being called a Hurricane?

Urgh, the strongest winds are even asociated with a sting jet.
