The longer-term outlook remains poor for expanding snow cover in Europe.

The Euro high relaxes southward this week but the cold air looks very maritime, seriously limiting low-altitude snowfall except perhaps in parts of Scandinavia.

Then, signs are it builds back next week, shutting out the cold air from most parts yet again.

At this rate, unseasonable spring warmth - and in places, heat - is also going to be a big topic in Europe and western Asia this year, unless the weather patterns change markedly by mid-March at the latest, to put down a good amount of snow that can bed-in and resist rapid melting as the sun shines down ever-stronger.

In March 2001 (I think) I spent a week in Courchevel when it was 16C at resort level (1650 metres!), and the pistes had rivers running down them. That was rubbish.

January 2020 was the warmest January on record across Europe.

After a much milder than average December and the warmest January on record, winter 2019-20 is now a serious contender for the warmest European winter on record.

With very good agreement emerging in FI for high pressure to reside over eastern Europe bringing balmy SSW'lys it will be a serious contender for the warmest ever winter..this coupled with a very early Spring.

At least it looks a bit better in parts of the Alps today.
This is resort level 1000m at Saalbach. Nice and snowy.

Freezing level seems to be about 700m today.

But not record breaking (baring odd local ones), and i suspect the heat is somewhat foehn related.
